Community Safety & Well-Being (CSWB) - Jali Care: Storytelling and Healing for ACB Communities

Jali Care is an innovative, evidence-based training and capacity-building initiative led by the Ribbon Rouge Foundation. It was created in response to findings from the national Journey Mapping Across Canada Project, which revealed deep inequities and systemic barriers faced by Black 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in accessing inclusive, affirming, and culturally competent care.

Jali Care directly addresses these gaps by equipping service providers in both public and non-profit sectors with the tools and understanding needed to better serve ACB 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. Funded by the City of Edmonton (COE) under the Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Initiative (2024–2026), this program is delivered as a charitable, community-serving project.

What Jali Care Offers

Jali Care provides a modular training curriculum that is:

  • Community-informed and culturally grounded, reflecting the lived experiences of ACB 2SLGBTQIA+ people
  • Delivered in-person (English) and available online (in both English and French)
  • Focused on strengthening practical skills, cultural humility, and intersectional awareness

The five core modules cover:

  • Culturally Appropriate Care
  • Intersectionality and Identity
  • Gender and Sexual Orientation Across Cultures
  • Racial and Cultural Discrimination in Service Settings
  • The Influence of Culture on Wellness and Help-Seeking

Participants gain insight into how race, gender, sexuality, and cultural identity intersect to shape experiences of care, and how to create safer, more inclusive spaces for healing and support.

Why Jali Care Matters

Jali Care advances key priorities in:

  • Mental health equity and culturally safe care
  • Anti-racism and anti-oppression practices
  • 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in health and social services
  • Building community safety and well-being through inclusive systems change

By centering the voices and experiences of ACB 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, the program not only strengthens individual outcomes but also fosters broader systemic transformation in how services are designed and delivered.

Get Involved: Whether you're a service provider, organization, or community leader, Jali Care offers a unique opportunity to enhance your capacity to serve diverse communities with care, dignity, and cultural awareness.
